About the Item

A gorgeous, impressive and rare French farmhouse oak Refectory or Monastery trestle dining table in lovely antique condition. Most likely made in France in the early 20th Century or possibly earlier, this striking dining table will add superb traditional artisan quality and a wonderfully sculptural French Country aesthetic to any setting. Comfortably seating 8-10 and up to 12 seats at a squeeze, this is one of the best refectory dining tables we’ve seen. A fabulous example of traditional craftsmanship with so much to admire about it, it is wonderfully carved from richly toned, super-chunky and beautifully patterned solid oak, is impressively sized and reassuringly very heavy but also easily moveable as it has been crafted in four sturdy parts and takes only a few minutes to assemble. It features a 4.5cm deep top with cleated ends supported by a pair of show-stopping and wonderfully carved substantial trestle ends, which are joined by a beautifully rustic, curving and impressively chunky stretcher bar. Artisan master-craftsmanship and traditional joinery are evident throughout. Particularly eye-catching are the tusk-tenon-peg joints which secure the stretcher bar to the trestle end, while the grooved-tongue joints of the cleated ends have been proudly left on display in the French artisan style. The tabletop has four holes carved out of the underside, which fit perfectly on to the knobs carved into the trestles, and all corresponding sections of the table are carved with ‘H’ and ‘F’ for ease of assembly. All in all this is an extremely impressive and very rare antique French artisan oak Refectory or Monastery trestle table, which won’t fail to impress and offers so much sculptural rustic flair to admire. CONDITION This is in very good condition. Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, it is structurally sound, incredibly sturdy, expertly crafted and built to last, and has only minor to-be-expected grazes and wear to show its age. Overall it's a really exceptional example in lovely condition and if well looked after it should be just as stunning and even more rare for many generations to come – please see the photos.
