Maison Lecan presents this round solid elm dining table from the 1950s-60s, a singularly rare design piece that sits squarely within the aesthetic of French rustic modernism of the Reconstruction — that founding movement in which visionary designers such as Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Chapo transformed raw solid wood into an architectural language of its own. Its cruciform base in solid elm, composed of robust rectangular-section uprights joined in a cross, directly evokes the constructive power of Chapo — notably the spirit of his legendary S11 table — while distinguishing itself through a more restrained elegance, without the visible wooden keys that are the master's signature. The rustic-chic character of the piece, the nobility of the chosen elm and the generosity of its volumes also recall the furniture designed by Perriand for the mountain resorts of Les Arcs, where solid wood became both building material and object of desire. Yet it is the top that truly commands attention. The mountain elm, with its turbulent grain, tightly knotted burl zones and exceptionally vivid flame figuring, unfolds like a natural painting — deep caramels, warm ochres, sinuous lines that make every surface utterly unique and irreplaceable. This most prized of French modernist timbers reveals here its full graphic power and characteristic amber warmth. The construction — robust and artisanal — favours the expression of raw material over ornament, bearing witness to high-quality craftsmanship from an era that built to last and to endure across generations. With a diameter of 121 cm, this table comfortably seats 6 to 8 guests in a convivial, unhierarchical spirit.
