About the Item

An Extremely Attractive, Very Good Quality And Relatively Rare Pair Of Early 19th Century Regency Period, Birdseye Maple Veneered Occasional Side Tables, Or End Tables, Each Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Tops And Friezes, Raised On Unusual And Elegant Triple Turned Column End Supports With Ebonised Turnings, United By Low Central Stretchers And Raised On Original Carved Scrolling Feet. Birdseye maple was one of the most fashionable and highly prized decorative timbers employed by cabinet makers during the Regency period, its distinctive figuring and wonderfully warm golden colour making it particularly desirable for the production of fine quality furniture. This pair are particularly unusual in their construction, with the triple column end supports creating an extremely elegant and architectural appearance. The contrasting ebonised turnings provide further decorative interest, whilst the low central stretchers give strength and balance to the overall design without detracting from their elegant appearance. Occasional tables of this type were produced in relatively small numbers during the Regency period and it is very unusual to find a genuine pair like this still together. Their relatively narrow proportions also make them extremely practical for modern day use and they would work equally well as end tables alongside a sofa, as lamp tables, or positioned either side of a bed. As with all items which we offer for sale, they have been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and experienced traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring that they are ready for placement straight into the home. Circa 1820. Height 28in. Width 24in. Depth 13.75in.
