About the Item

Combining refined craftsmanship with an ingenious space-saving design, this antique Louis XIII-style envelope card table was crafted in France circa 1890. Built of richly patinated walnut, the square games table stands on four boldly carved barley-twist legs ending in rounded bun feet. The supports are joined by an elaborate X-form twisted stretcher centered by a turned urn finial, giving the compact table a particularly sculptural architectural presence. The molded frieze incorporates a useful storage drawer fitted with a brass ring pull and is accented at the corners with carved foliate blocks. When closed, the top displays four triangular panels converging around a pierced floral rosette. The hinged envelope leaves unfold as the top rotates, revealing a larger square playing surface lined in green baize and framed by a walnut border. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, the table displays a warm walnut patina. Practical and versatile, it may serve as a card or game table, side table, occasional table, or compact drinks table in a library, den, or living room.
