About the Item

Antique chess table Italy (Sorrento) Walnut, etc. Late 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 71 x 50 x 50 cm Description: This richly inlaid and finely marquetry-decorated piece of furniture rests on a three-legged base with elegantly curved legs. A characteristic feature is the so-called ‘leg-shoulder’ inlay, typical of Sorrento furniture art. Above the leg structure rises a baluster-shaped central foot, which supports the square top with bevelled corners. Both the edge of the top and the frame are decorated with fine marquetry. The chessboard inlay set into the tabletop is enclosed by a geometrically designed frame. Another typical design feature of Sorrento furniture is the tabletop, which can be unscrewed from the base using a wooden threaded mechanism, making the table easy to transport and allowing for space-saving storage. Condition: Restored to a ready-to-use condition with a classic shellac polish. The figurines shown in the photographs are not included in the price. Interesting facts: The town of Sorrento, near Naples, was and remains famous for its woodworking workshops. This table is absolutely typical of the region.
