About the Item

Round living room table in walnut burl with an inlay depicting St. George and the Dragon on the circular top, in good condition, Italy, circa 1880. This is a piece of furniture in the classical style, reminiscent of 19th-century Italian craftsmanship or inspired by the Neo-Renaissance and eclectic styles. The top features rich walnut burl inlay, recognizable by its characteristic “eye-like” grain patterns that create a marbled visual effect. In the center stands out a fine wood inlay of a boxwood carving depicting Saint George and the Dragon, a classic motif symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The central figure is enclosed within a slender circular frame, with four floral motifs arranged in a “cardinal point” pattern that evoke the Baroque or Renaissance style. The edge of the surface features a band carved in relief with acanthus leaf motifs. The body is richly turned and carved. It features a central base decorated with pods and acanthus leaves, ensuring sturdiness and visual continuity with the rest of the piece. The table rests on a sturdy tripod base decorated with scroll carvings that end in curled or “claw-shaped” feet, typical of artistic cabinetmaking. In good condition, despite minor losses of burl wood on the top, which are consistent with its late 19th-century date. Date: circa 1880.
