About the Item

A richly detailed example of mid‑19th‑century French craftsmanship, this pedestal table is distinguished by its beautifully carved putto figure supporting the tabletop. Created in the 1850s, it reflects the Romantic era’s fascination with expressive ornamentation, mythological motifs, and sculptural furniture forms. The central column is carved as a full‑figure putto, rendered with remarkable attention to detail—from the softly modeled features and flowing curls to the dynamic posture as it lifts the basket‑like support above its head. This sculptural element gives the table a sense of movement and narrative, transforming it from a functional object into a decorative artwork. The scalloped tabletop rests gracefully atop the figure, while the base is supported by three ornate, scrolling legs enriched with intricate carving. The dark, polished wood enhances the depth of the relief and highlights the artisan’s skill, while subtle signs of age add authenticity and historical character. Pedestal tables of this type were often placed in elegant salons or grand entryways, used to display vases, sculptures, or floral arrangements. Today, it serves equally well as a statement piece in both classical and eclectic interiors, offering a blend of charm, craftsmanship, and sculptural presence. A captivating French pedestal table from the 1850s—celebrated for its finely carved putto, romantic detailing, and enduring decorative appeal. Dimensions table top: Width: 35 cm Depth: 32 cm
