About the Item

French Painted Tripod Table, Louis XVI Style, Circa 1860–1880 An elegant occasional table made in the middle of the 19th Century France, worked in the Louis XVI revival taste.France, its oval top inset with a fine antique needlework panel depicting a scattered garland of pink roses and delicate foliage on a soft ivory ground — likely a remnant of period tapestry or petit point, preserved beneath glass or protective varnish and bordered by a narrow ebonised edge. The top sits above a slender, fluted column, its capital carved with a band of acanthus leaf detailing. This descends to a tripod base of three generously scrolled, sabre-form legs, each hand-carved with acanthus leaf motifs at the knee and terminating in expressive paw feet — a hallmark of quality in period carving, where the modelling of the toes and knuckle detail distinguishes fine workmanship from later reproductions. The table retains its old cream/ivory painted surface, softly worn with age and consistent with 19th-century French decorative painted furniture, allowing the patina and honest wear to speak to its authenticity and years of use. A charming and versatile piece, equally suited as a lamp table, occasional table, or decorative accent. Further information The needlework top itself — a floral Aubusson-style panel set into a painted guéridon table — was a signature decorative device of the Napoleon III era. Cabinetmakers of this period were deliberately reviving 18th-century Louis XVI aesthetics (sometimes called “goût Rothschild”), and fitting genuine period or newly-worked tapestry panels into oval or circular table tops was a popular way to signal taste and refinement in that revivalist style. • The paw feet and acanthus carving on their own could point earlier — to Empire or Restauration (c.1800–1830), when Egyptian/Roman-revival paw feet were at their height. But paired with a fine floral needlework top and a soft cream painted finish, this combination is much more consistent with the mid-century revival taste than with true Empire austerity, which tended toward mahogany, ormolu, and bolder classical motifs rather than pastel florals. • The cream/ivory painted surface with ebonised trim was itself a Louis XVI-revival hallmark during this period, echoing 18th-century painted furniture.
