About the Item

Made in Italy in the nineteenth century, this octagonal pedestal table has a top decorated with star and geometric marquetry in light wood. Marquetry, the inlay of contrasting woods, forms the star and geometric patterns across the octagonal top, a decorative technique for which Italian work was known. The pedestal base raises the top on a central support, and the octagonal form gives the table a strong decorative outline. Suited to use as an occasional or centre table in a sitting room, hall, or library, the table provides a compact surface and a decorative focal point. Its nineteenth-century date and inlaid top give it period character. Suited to both period and plainer modern interiors, the table combines a practical surface with fine decorative inlay. As an Italian marquetry pedestal table, it offers a decorative inlaid surface together with the sculptural form of an octagonal top on a central pedestal, working as an occasional or centre table.
