About the Item

Maitland-Smith Neoclassical Pedestal with Marbled Agateware-Style Lacquer A striking Neoclassical display pedestal by Maitland-Smith, handmade in the Philippines during the late 20th century. Its tall, architectural form is covered in a richly patterned, hand-decorated lacquer finish recalling the swirling surfaces of European agateware and French Aputware pottery. The decorative treatment combines a warm amber-gold ground with irregular brown and umber lines arranged in concentric, rippling patterns. Changing direction from one panel to another, the design suggests sections cut from marbled clay, dramatically figured root wood, or geological strata. Multiple layers of clear lacquer give the surface depth and a luminous, almost glazed appearance. This finish relates visually to terre mêlée, or “mixed earth,” the technique associated with Aptware pottery produced in Provence from the 18th century onward. Contrasting clays were layered and compressed to create naturally marbled patterns resembling agate or wood grain. Maitland-Smith translates that ceramic vocabulary into a sophisticated painted furniture surface. The pedestal’s stepped square plinth, slightly tapered shaft and projecting molded capital derive from classical architectural columns and traditional European sculpture stands. Restrained gold-colored moldings and fine bordering provide definition against the animated marbled surface. At 42.75 inches high, the pedestal is well proportioned for displaying a bronze, ceramic vessel, bust, glass object, or other sculpture near eye level. The approximately 11-inch-square display surface accommodates a substantial object while maintaining a compact footprint. Retains the original underside label reading "Hand Made in Philippines, Designed by Maitland-Smith Ltd.” Model or inventory number 232-007. Dimensions: 42.75 in. high × 12 in. wide × 12 in. deep. Display surface: approximately 11 in. square. Good vintage condition with scattered surface wear, minor edge losses, and small marks consistent with age and use.
