About the Item

This antique white painted iron table with marble top was produced in France, circa 1870. Tables such as these would have been used to do display pastries in the French “patisseries”, but more often used to display fresh cuts of meat in a butcher shop. Today, these antique tables from France are highly sought after for their decorative and practical nature. The 1 ¼” thick Carrara marble top is white with traces of gray veining. A similar white has been used to paint the iron base that is comprised of C-scrolls and floral motifs. The four legs, which sit on small block feet, are formed by large C-scrolls with floral terminals. An H-stretcher adorned with centrally located floral cups offers additional support. Both side connectors attach to the floral terminals of the legs and have a lobed finial noix. There is a third connector positioned higher up on the base that has a large floret center on each side, flanked by a pair of floral cups. Although tables such as our 19th century painted iron table with marble top are seldom used in pastry or butcher shops today, it is still a highly functional and versatile table. Place it in the kitchen as a small breakfast table or a prep/display table at the end of an island. It can also be used as a console table in an entry hall or living room.

Early 18th Century Painted Italian Console Table with Rouge Royal Marble Top

Early 18th Century Painted Italian Console Table with Rouge Royal Marble Top

Located in Dallas, TX

Console tables are beautiful, graceful tables that also serve a practical purpose. These tables are aligned against a wall, often between two windows and/or placed beneath a mirror. You might find accessories or artwork resting on the marble or wooden tops. During the Regence period, these tables would often be painted to match the colors of the wood paneling of the walls, indicating that this console table came from an opulent room. Hand-carved in Italy during the 1700’s, the wood has a lacquered white finish with gilded highlights. The rouge royal marble from Belgium has white and gray veining and light inclusions with a quarter round finish on three sides (like most consoles, the backside is typically left unpainted or raw – as this is the side that abuts the wall). Beneath the thick marble are four cabriole legs with pied-de-biche (deer’s foot...
