About the Item

Elegant and unusual French Mid-Century rattan bar and aperitif stand designed by Louis Sognot, France, circa the 1950s. This distinctive piece is characteristic of Sognot’s celebrated postwar work with rattan, a material he helped establish as an important element of modern French furniture design. The structure is arranged vertically on two levels. The upper section features a circular openwork serving platform framed by an elegant decorative border of interlacing curved rattan elements. A large arched handle rises above the piece, giving the stand a particularly graphic and sculptural silhouette. The lower section forms a generous cylindrical basket designed for bottles, bar accessories, or decorative storage. Its open framework combines vertical canes, concentric circles, and geometric motifs formed from bent and hand-bound rattan. The construction reflects Sognot’s ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with the clean, functional spirit of modern design. Louis Sognot (1892-1970) was one of the leading French designers and decorators of the 20th century. After working within the modernist and Art Deco movements, he increasingly explored rattan and other natural materials from the 1940s onward. His postwar furniture is known for its lightness, organic curves, technical ingenuity, and relaxed elegance. The warm natural patina of this example emphasizes the handcrafted quality and authentic character of the material. Today, the piece can function beautifully as a cocktail stand, home bar, bottle holder, serving station, or decorative accent. A highly appealing example of Louis Sognot’s French Mid-Century rattan furniture, combining sculptural presence, practicality, and the relaxed sophistication associated with 1950s French interiors.
