About the Item

This impressive drum stool from Shanxi province was hand-carved from solid limestone nearly 250 years ago, designed to add the essential stone element to a traditional Chinese garden. Stone drums such as this were fixtures of courtly gardens and outdoor pavilions, contrasting foliage with the permanence of stone and providing a place to sit and ponder. The hefty stone stool has a classic barrel shape, marked with white veining and a natural texture inherent to the stone. The upper half is carved to resemble fabric draped over the top, secured by faux rings and etched with a pattern of interlocking coins, a motif for wealth and prosperity. Between the folds of "fabric" are imitation ring handles, carved in shallow relief with hollowed recessions and floral lock plate etchings. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Seat: 11"
