Duramen Stainless Steel Top and Solid Walnut Sculptural Object by Jules Lobgeois Unique Piece Dimensions: D 35 x H 42 cm. Materials: Solid walnut, stainless steel. The heartwood is the inner part of the wood and corresponds to the oldest growth areas of the tree. Its heart, hard as steel, is the tree's memory, and it is this material, often centuries old, that is used to make the "Duramen" sculptures. Available made-to-measure. Jules Lobgeois is a French designer based in Normandy, in the Eure region. He is a graduate of the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués (ENSAAMA) Olivier de Serres in Paris and the DSAA LAAB in Rennes. After studying industrial design, he turned to sculpture applied to objects, training with a metalworker and then with cabinetmaker Kaspar Hamacher, and discovered an attraction for these two materials. From then on, his work focused on bringing these two materials together to create a poetic link between the organic nature of wood and the rigidity of metal. The wood he uses comes from fallen trees, which he saves until the right moment to work on them. His sculpture is spontaneous, and it is in contact with the wood that the shapes are defined in a constant back-and-forth between the material and his tools. Particular attention is paid to the grain, vibration, and structure of each piece of wood. The sculptures are conceived as volumes of capture and refraction, revealing their taut lines and futuristic curves through a play of light. His work has been exhibited at ToolsGalerie in Paris, at St. Vincent's in Antwerp, Belgium, and at La Lune gallery.
