Handmade High Table by Henry D'ath Dimensions: D 25 x H 135 cm Materials: Wood, calligraphy ink. Piece is handmade by artist. Carved by hand from a single wooden log over many months, this series of tall tables is shaped with a consideration of what the material will allow. Many legs come from the base of the piece, shaped with just enough room for hand tools to pass. With little intention other than to start, a laboured process of subtraction governs tables figure. As the wood dries each leg is pulled and distorted along obscure lines to its eventual shape. The piece is finished with many coats of calligraphy ink. Giving a duality in revealing and concealing. When in shadow the shapes seem simple, almost two dimensional. In light the complexity of the shape revealed in the subtle distortions of the surface. Henry d’ath is a New Zealand born, Hong Kong based artist and architect. Using predominantly salvaged material, the artist routinely handworks each piece over many months resulting in lucid, yet ambiguously functional pieces of sculpture. Each work in this current collection is an individual edition in an ongoing series, hand-made by the artist themselves.
