About the Item

A stunning and sophisticated pair of side tables by French designer Michel Pignères, exemplifying the sleek elegance and material innovation that defined 1970s French modernism. The tables feature Pignères’ signature smoky mirrored surfaces, which subtly distort and reflect the surrounding environment, creating an illusion of lightness and space. The case is held within a refined structural frame of gilt brass and stainless steel, which acts both as support and as sculptural detail—visually “floating” the case while providing a linear contrast to the reflective surfaces. Michel Pignères is part of a generation of post-war French designers who pushed beyond the austerity of early modernism, embracing material richness, mirrored finishes, and metal detailing to create interiors that felt simultaneously minimal and glamorous. His work is aligned with a broader moment in French design that included figures like Maria Pergay, Michel Boyer, and Jacques Charpentier, all of whom used polished metal, Lucite, and glass to form interiors that felt weightless, architectural, and urbane. This pair of tables is a superb example of that ethos—elegant, functional, and theatrical without excess. The mirrored surfaces amplify light and expand space, while the gilt brass adds a note of warmth and quiet luxury. Though likely custom-made or limited in production, these tables reflect a design vocabulary that emerged from Parisian ateliers and elite decorating firms, appealing to sophisticated clients who embraced both innovation and refinement. Perfect as end tables, nightstands, or flanking a pair of vintage lounge chairs, these pieces are remarkably versatile. Their use is limited only by imagination—ideal in a bedroom, living space, dressing room, or even an entryway where their sculptural lines and reflective surfaces can truly sing. Designers such as Kelly Wearstler, Steven Volpe, Jean-Louis Deniot, or Pierre Yovanovitch might use such tables to bring structure, shine, and sophistication to interiors that blur the line between modernism and artistry. We currently have two pairs available—please contact us if you're interested in acquiring a matched set of four. An exceptional expression of 1970s French modernism—where form, material, and atmosphere combine into a look that is effortless, intelligent, and enduringly chic.
