Joel Escalona is one of the most prolific and multidisciplinary designers of his generation. Pilast is a sculptural piece of occasional furniture. It is inspired by the early 19th-century neoclassical style ’Swedish Empire’ and serves as both a side table and a stool. Pilast is crafted using traditional wood bending techniques applied to a modern, pure white stone composite. The result looks as if carved from marble, but a closer inspection reveals an unexpected precision in both material and shape. As an amalgam of classical clues, traditional craft, and modern material, Pilast has an unusual presence.
