About the Item

German Mid-Century Sculptural Mosaik Sofa Table by Berthold Müller 1960s The top is made of small, sand-colored, hand-cut ceramic tiles arranged in a soft, flowing pattern. An abstract decoration consisting of gold, black, and purple glass stones is incorporated into this tile pattern, lending depth and contrast to the subject. This decoration features elements that differ from the base stones, giving it a sculptural and very elegant appearance. The top is edged with a 3.5 cm wide brushed brass band and stands on four conical, black lacquered brass legs with accentuated brass bases (diameter 4.5 cm). Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen (1893-1979) was a German sculptor who specialized in mosaics. In the 1960s and 1970s, Müller worked as a freelance designer and created a series of furniture that was characterized by its simplicity, clean lines, and functionality. Müller's work was widely recognized during his lifetime, and he received several awards for his designs, including the prestigious German Design Award. Today, his furniture designs are highly sought after by collectors and can be found in the collections of many important museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
