About the Item

Fabulous 1980s Scott Sandell New Rage signed and numbered 33/36 limited-edition large-scale mixed media monoprint artwork on Japanese Kozo handmade paper. Hand signed and numbered 33 out of a total edition of 36 by the artist on the lower right and titled new rage in the lower left. The artwork's subject in the Japanese text describes the event of the world championship that was held in Okinawa, Japan, in 1981, the Japanese champion, the Shonan coast famous for windsurfing, and Lake Yamanaka. The artwork techniques involve a multi-layered, mixed media that blurs the lines between printmaking and painting. Features a central vertical panel of natural, textured Japanese Kozo paper, characterized by visible tree bark and natural fibers that create an organic surface, which is layered over a larger, vibrant red background panel. Dominating the central paper is bold, black brushwork, applied with broad, expressive strokes in a manner highly influenced by Asian calligraphy (Shodo) or ciphers. The entire composition is set against a black background within the vibrant red frame and plexiglass, giving it a modern, gallery-style presentation. This layering technique enhances the visual appeal of the piece by adding depth and drawing the viewer's eye towards the artwork. This artwork is a breathtaking piece of collectible art. Scott Sandell is a contemporary American abstract expressionist artist born in 1953, known for his innovative mixed-media approach to printmaking, painting, and installations. His work is described as "third-generation abstract expressionism" and can be found in numerous public and private collections worldwide. Sandell's style is characterized by a blend of traditional techniques and an abstract expressionist approach. He employs a variety of techniques, including oil and acrylic paint, photography, intaglio, woodblock, and lithographic printing, focusing on pure form and color to portray the forces of light and energy. His work was heavily influenced by Japanese printmaking and traditional Asian banners and kimonos, leading to a long period where he used Japanese handmade papers in his art. Scott Sandell's art is held in many prestigious collections, including the Walker Art Center, the Brooklyn Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Library of Congress, the Chrysler Museum, and Harvard University. And has been featured in large-scale site installations, including the Pittsburgh Penguin's arena, the IRS main campus in Kansas City, the Ritz Carlton in Doha, Qatar, and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
