Ernst Fuchs (1930 - 2015) "Head of a cherub", created in 1982 Color silkscreen

By Ernst Fuchs

Located in Münster, DE

Ernst Fuchs (1930 - 2015) "Head of a cherub", created in 1982 Color silkscreen, ed. 200 pieces, signed and numbered Dimensions 67.7 cm x 45 cm Ernst Fuchs was born on February 13, 1930 in Vienna Ottakring as the only child of Maximilian and Leopoldine Fuchs; his father was of Jewish descent, which is why his grandfather and father emigrated to the USA and Shanghai in 1938 after the annexation of Austria by the Third Reich. To protect little Ernst from anti-Semitic hostility, it was decided to baptize him according to the Roman Catholic rite in 1942. The 12-year-old Ernst Fuchs was allowed to choose his own baptismal name and chose Ernst Peter Paul, in honor of the painter Peter Paul Rubens, whom he admired at the time. Around the same time, his godmother's brother, the painter and restorer Alois Schiemann, taught him the basics of drawing and painting. Until the age of 15, he attended the St. Anna painting school in Vienna, where he was taught sculpture and painting by Emmy Steinböck and Fritz Fröhlich. After the war, Ernst Fuchs was finally able to take up his longed-for studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, which he had previously been denied for racist reasons. His teachers were first Robin Andersen, then Albert Paris Gütersloh. While still a student, he was allowed to hold his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1949, and soon afterwards, in 1950, he also moved to the French capital. Ernst Fuchst traveled through Europe and the USA for six years before taking an extended stay at the Dormition Monastery on Mount Zion in Israel in 1957 to study icon painting in depth. He finally returned to Vienna in 1962, where he founded the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism with former fellow students, of which he himself was to become the most important representative. The early years in particular were characterized by a strong surrealism; mythical and religious symbols in particular appealed to Ernst Fuchs and permeated his work. Later, Fuchs turned increasingly to Mannerism. Ernst Fuchs' artistic spectrum broadened over the years: he sang and recorded various albums, which, like the majority of his paintings, were inspired by mystical motifs, and he designed stage sets for such famous operas as Wagner's Parsifal and Lohengrin or Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Ernst Fuchs also wrote philosophical treatises. He repeatedly collaborated with other artists, including the musicians Klaus Schulze...

Fred Otnes Jr Mixed Media Figural Painting on Board

By Fred Otnes

Located in New York, NY

Exquisite painting by prominent artist Fred Otnes, Jr of a figural woman in gold, orange and warm earth colors. This unique mixed media of oil and collage has diverse layers in the painting although to the touch the painting is smooth. This piece is painted on board and is found in a gilt leaf frame with a linen liner. Signed on the lower right corner as well as what appears to be on verso on the craft backing paper. From the personal collection of the artist. Image only is 29.25" high by 26.25" wide. Colors on the painting may vary due to room lighting and photography. Fred Otnes (1925-2015), was a prominent illustrator, painter and collage artist who embraced abstraction. “Fred Otnes brings to his collage paintings a classical refinement and control that makes poetry out of chance pictorial effects,” the artist and critic Maureen Mullarkey wrote in reviewing a retrospective in Manhattan in 2006 for The New York Sun...

Richard Texier Mixed Media Painting

By Richard Texier

Located in New York, NY

Fantastic mixed media painting by Contemporary French Artist Richard Texier. A combination of watercolor, ink and collage on paper this work was is called Marges. Signed upper right corner and dated. This painting was once part of GE's corporate art collection. Colors may vary slightly. Image size is 13 inches high by 8.50 inches wide. Today Texier is regarded as one of the best living artists of his generation. He began painting at a young age and his keen interest in the history of astronomy is largely inspired by the creation of his own personnel cosmography. Known for both his paintings and sculptures he has installations throughout the world. His works are to be found in numerous important public and private collections, both in France and abroad. Many major museums around the world have exhibited his work including the National Museum of Taiwan, the National Museum of Luxembourg, the Marine Museum in Paris, the Botanical Museum of Brussels, the House of Culture Moscow and the Shanghai museum of Fine Art. He has also graced the covers of Decorating Magazines especially in France. HIs current contemporary large scale paintings retail between $28,000 and $64,000 both at auction houses like Christie's and Artcurial as well as galleries. His sculptures have even higher price points including two that reached $404,00 and $915,00. In addition he has also worked with Daum creating unique glass sculptures. Since November 6, 2015, his red bronze sculpture: Angel Bear, more than 7 meters in height which portrays a bear with wings, is placed on the Gare du Nord square in Paris. It evokes the downward spiral of polar bears due to global warming, one of his favorite themes. Each, unsigned from an edition of unknown. Highly collectible. _ Keith Haring (b. 1958 Reading, PA): Keith Haring’s first major works were his subway drawings. Haring produced a large number of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his motifs outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring's 1st solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the historic Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. This was a controversial move, as many galleries criticized Haring for “de-valuing” the art object while others, such as Andy Warhol, championed Haring’s insistence on making art accessible and affordable. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant, as in the work of Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, KAWS and Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the Crack is Wack mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century. Related categories: Keith Haring 1982. Keith Haring book...
