About the Item

A rare Italian Renaissance walnut panel dating from the late 15th to early 16th century, deeply carved in high relief with a striking depiction of the Poor Souls in Purgatory. The composition portrays three anguished figures emerging from stylised flames, their expressive gestures and sorrowful faces conveying the suffering and hope associated with the doctrine of purification after death. In Catholic teaching, Purgatory is the state in which souls who die in God's grace, yet remain imperfectly purified, undergo spiritual cleansing before entering the fullness of heavenly joy. Representations of the Poor Souls in Purgatory were a powerful devotional motif in Renaissance Italy. Comparable carvings from this period were often incorporated into churches and monasteries, sometimes serving as petos esmoleiros (alms boxes), encouraging prayers and charitable offerings for the benefit of the faithful departed. Expertly carved from walnut, the panel possesses remarkable depth, expressive character, and a rich, lustrous patina acquired over centuries. Both evocative and visually compelling, it stands as an impressive example of early Italian religious sculpture and would make a significant addition to any collection of Renaissance art or ecclesiastical antiquities. The carving remains in good condition for its age, displaying expected signs of wear consistent with its considerable antiquity. Provenance: Private Collection, London; Doullens, Lot 128, 20 June 1999. Dimensions: Height 50 cm × Width 49 cm × Depth 7 cm. We ship internationally, tracked and insured.
