About the Item

An extraordinary triptych of 19th-century French scenic wallpaper, preserved as three individual panels mounted on custom linen-wrapped frames. Together, the panels form an enchanting panoramic landscape, transporting the viewer to an imagined exotic locale where figures gather amid lush vegetation and the romantic ruins of a Moorish villa. The dramatic architecture grounds the center of the composition: an arcaded brick structure with decorative tracery to enhance the archways, and a picturesque tower nearly overtaken by foliage. Small figures animate the foreground and lend a wonderful sense of scale and narrative, while distant hills and an expansive blue sky create the illusion of a landscape extending well beyond the confines of the panels. This imagery reflects the 18th-19th century European fascination with faraway places of the Grand Tour, historic architecture and romanticized visions of the Mediterranean and Near East—subjects particularly well suited to the immersive tradition of French panoramic wallpaper. Especially intriguing is the remarkable survival of the paper itself, now extracted from the original context, its printed and painted surface characterized by numerous areas of loss and craquelure revealing the neutral linen ground. Rather than detracting from the composition, this timeworn patina gives the panels an almost fresco-like quality, softening the imagery and lending the landscape an archaeological character. Mounted separately, the three panels can be displayed together as a continuous triptych or potentially arranged individually according to the needs of an interior. Their impressive scale gives them the visual impact of architectural decoration while the linen-wrapped mounts allow them to function as works of art in their own right. Presently fitted with eye hooks along the upper edges for hanging; the hardware could readily be adapted to suit the desired installation. Please view the image gallery closely for the extensive losses, craquelure, fading, and other age-related wear that form an integral part of the panels' character. Each panel: approximately 19 ⅝” W
