About the Item

This is an antique Japanese Diagonal Cedar Wall Panel. Originally used as an architectural element, it has been given new life as a wall-mounted piece after fulfilling its original role. Quiet yet undeniably present, it brings depth and a subtle sense of tension to any space. It is believed to have been crafted in the early Showa period (1920s–1940s). The solid cedar planks, arranged diagonally, each display unique expressions, and their continuous grain creates a composition reminiscent of abstract painting. The natural randomness of the material and the intentional design by human hands come together to form a truly one-of-a-kind visual landscape. Depending on the light and its placement, the shadows shift, allowing for changing impressions throughout the day. Over many decades, the cedar has matured into a deep, rich tone, with a dry texture and a gentle luster on the surface. This quality is the result of time’s accumulation and cannot be artificially replicated. Nail marks and minor surface wear remain as quiet traces of its history, enhancing the inherent strength and rustic beauty of the material. The structure is simple yet sturdy, allowing for stable installation. Weighing approximately 9 kg, it is relatively lightweight and easy to handle as a wall-mounted piece. It is well suited not only for residential interiors but also for galleries and retail spaces. Despite its substantial surface area, it does not feel heavy, instead elevating the atmosphere with quiet sophistication. This piece embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the appreciation of imperfection and the beauty of aging. It harmonizes beautifully with modern minimalist interiors, offering more than mere decoration; it transforms the character of the space itself. It will be carefully packed and safely shipped from Japan. Weight: 9 kg
