About the Item

An impressive large decorative wall plate by Zsolnay Pécs, Hungary, richly decorated with an exotic parrot surrounded by stylized flowering plants, foliage and insects. The exceptionally detailed composition combines vivid shades of green, blue, burgundy, yellow, violet and pink with delicate gilt outlining and gold highlights. Fine linear drawing gives the feathers, leaves and blossoms an almost illustrative quality, while the asymmetrical botanical arrangement reflects the strong influence of Japonisme and Orientalist decorative arts on European ceramics of the period. At the center, the colorful parrot is depicted perched among fantastic flowers and elongated tropical foliage. A blue dragonfly and numerous highly stylized blossoms add further detail to the unusually elaborate decoration. The plate has a gently curved profile and an ivory-colored glazed ground, allowing the vibrant enamel colors and gold decoration to stand out beautifully. The reverse retains painted factory and/or decorator's numbers. A particularly decorative example of Zsolnay Pécs art pottery, equally suitable as a statement wall piece, displayed on a stand, or incorporated into a collection of historic Hungarian ceramics.
