About the Item

Mid-20th century handmade Israeli street name sign. Made of enamel and iron, this street sign was created shortly after the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. The sign is written in bolt white letters over a dark blue background, alluding to the colors of the national flag of the newly established state. The sign names the street 'Dafna' in Tel Aviv, in both Hebrew and English letters (in transliteration). The origin of the name Dafna (Daphne) is from Greek mythology, Daphne, daughter of the god of the river, is a nymph who turned into a tree and thus the laurel tree was created. The meaning of the name Dafna - an evergreen tree or shrub with shiny and fragrant leaves, also known as 'Ar Azil', on which (bay leaves) are used as a spice. The laurel tree is characterized by its wide branches and the pleasant shade it gives to those sitting under it. This signs refers to and mentions Dafna, an ancient city in the upper Galilee, and a kibbutz in the Galilee panhandle that was founded in 1939 as part of operation Tower and Stockade.
