About the Item

Monumental Brass Rubbing of Sir John D’Arbernon England, after the celebrated medieval brass at St Mary’s Church, Stoke D’Abernon, Surrey This striking monumental brass rubbing depicts Sir John D’Arbernon, one of the earliest known knightly effigies preserved in England and among the most iconic survivals of medieval funerary art. The original brass, housed in the ancient Saxon church of St Mary’s in Stoke D’Abernon, Surrey, commemorates Sir John D’Arbernon (d. 1277), a Norman knight and landholder whose family gave the village its name after the Norman Conquest. Rendered in exquisite linear detail, the figure is shown standing in full chain mail with sword and shield, accompanied by the heraldic lion at his feet — a traditional symbol of courage and nobility. The elegant elongated proportions and finely engraved armour capture the transition from Romanesque to Gothic aesthetics in late 13th-century England. Particularly notable is the shield bearing traces of original enamel decoration, a rare survival in medieval brass work. The D’Arbernon brass has long been regarded as one of the finest and earliest military brasses in Britain, celebrated both for its artistic refinement and historical importance. Monumental brasses emerged in medieval Europe as enduring memorials set into church floors, allowing the image and status of the deceased to survive for generations. By the Victorian era, brass rubbing had become a popular antiquarian pursuit, preserving these remarkable monuments through richly textured impressions on paper. This rubbing possesses the dramatic graphic quality for which monumental brasses are admired: bold golden contours, intricate medieval ornament, and an almost sculptural presence despite its flat surface. This was purchased from the family who's Mother (an artist) completed this work sometime in the 50's or 60's. The practice of Brass Rubbing is now very much discouraged due to conservation concerns. An evocative and highly decorative piece, equally compelling in a traditional interior, library, or contemporary collection of medieval and ecclesiastical art. Very difficult to photograph in our natural daylight studio, please forgive the intrusive reflections.
