About the Item

An exceptional pair of French mid-19th century gros and petit point needlework panels depicting dramatic Orientalist hunting scenes. One panel illustrates an intense tiger hunt, while the other portrays mounted warriors engaged in battle, both surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, palm trees and exotic birds. Executed with remarkable precision, the needlework displays outstanding detail, subtle colour gradations and impressive depth. The rich black background enhances the vibrant colours and finely rendered figures, creating a striking visual contrast. Both panels retain their original burr walnut veneered frames, which beautifully complement the warmth of the textiles. Inspired by the fascination with the Orient during the 19th century, these decorative panels combine European craftsmanship with romanticised exotic imagery. Their refined execution and unusual subject matter make them an elegant addition to any collection of antique textiles, Orientalist art or nineteenth-century decorative arts. Conditie Very good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with over 170 years of age. The needlework remains well preserved with vibrant colours and fine detail. Minor wear and small imperfections to the original burr walnut veneered frames. The price listed is for one panel. The pair is also available. Dimensions (this panel): 90 × 61 cm (35.4 × 24 in.)
