'Untitled' is part of a curated collection of original pen and inks on paper by Anthony Quinn. These works of fine art are on loan from The Anthony Quinn Trust for sale for a limited time. Partial proceeds will benefit the Anthony Quinn Foundation, which advances the belief that art, in all its forms, is inseparable and essential to learning and the enrichment of the mind. (Literature: Anthony Quinn (Mexican-American) 1915 – 2001 “If I were left alone on an island, I would reconstruct the rocks. I have a need to say ‘I was here’. Internationally recognized for his award-winning performances in film and theater throughout the 20th Century, Anthony Quinn was also one of the world’s most talented painters and sculptors. His bold, creative mind and spirit inspired people all over the world for over sixty years through his brilliant and moving portrayal of hundreds of fascinating, complex characters. It is the lesser-known, private, personal side of his life that inspired Quinn’s brilliant art. Prior to his acting career, Quinn painted sculpted and sketched, winning various awards and competitions throughout his teenage years. Fine art later gave Anthony Quinn an identity outside the world of acting. Throughout his years of filming in some of the most beautiful and remote places of the world, he continued to privately live his parallel life as a sculptor and painter. He would beautify his surroundings, whether in a five-star hotel or a trailer in the middle of the desert, with miniature sculptures created out of pieces of wood and rocks he collected on his long walks and bicycle rides. “We would film in some places where telephones were still a luxury -- in order to make an overseas phone call, one would have to wait hours for the operator to put the call through. I always kept note cards, markers, pencils and pastels by the phone so that I could draw while I waited. One day, during the filming of Zorba the Greek, I was shopping at the local flea market with my friend Sam Shaw. He saw a booth selling sketches and said, ‘Tony, look, those are a lot like your drawings in the drawer by the phone!’ I found out that our housekeeper had been taking them and selling them at the market.” A collection of Mr. Quinn’s pastel drawings were first exhibited in 1949 in Chicago during the nationally touring theater production of A Streetcar Named Desire in which he played the leading part of Stanley Kowalski. In response to a criticism by a friend, that “of course you will sell your artwork, people will buy it for your name!” he signed each with his mother’s maiden name, Oaxaca, and remained anonymous. Every piece in the exhibit was sold. He continued to paint and sculpt, but it wasn’t until 1981, that he was given his first international exhibition of sculpture and painting in Honolulu, Hawaii. The show included more than one hundred works of art. It was completely sold out on opening night. After that extraordinary beginning, Quinn had over twenty-five major exhibitions throughout the world including the Chapultapec Palace in Mexico, Schwarzenbach Castle in Switzerland, The Museum of Monterrey in Mexico, The Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina and galleries in Italy, Canada, Korea, Austria and New York. He was awarded highest honors by the Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris and was honored in the Oval Office by President Ronald Reagan with acceptance into the highly prestigious Presidential collection. His artwork remains today in the collections of many museums, celebrities and private collectors worldwide. On the subject of sculpting, Anthony Quinn would often quote the words of one of his great artistic heroes, Michelangelo Buonarotti; “I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me…I only have to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to other eyes as mine see it.” Just as the highest and noblest cultures and civilizations of all time continue to live on for all eternity through the great works of their architects, sculptors and painters, Anthony Quinn is destined to live on through his magnificent sculptures and paintings, his movies and his life’s example. “Most of us live our lives trying to play it safe, taking few risks. As children, we are used to constant challenges from other kids – the game of ‘I dare you’ that forces us to find the courage to expand our world.
