Architectural engineering drawing in charcoal and crayon Smithtown-Bridge over Macleay Australia by Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners, circa 1950. It is presented in its original frame. Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners English architect, civil engineer. An accomplished architectural draughtsman in the firm drew this artist impression to commemorate his architectural projects. The drawing offers a glimpse into the creative process of its time. Its intricacies reflect the meticulous thought and care that went into conceptualizing architectural projects. In its original condition, the frame showcases minor age-related wear that adds to its authenticity. The preserved patina speaks of its journey through time, bearing witness to decades of existence. The firm had been founded in 1922 by Scottish civil engineer, Brigadier-General Sir Alexander Gibb (1872-1958) , whom was President of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1936. Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners was the largest consulting civil engineering firm in the United Kingdom by 1939, and, through the 1950s and 1960s is believed to have been the largest in the world. It continued to grow until staff numbers peaked at around 1350 in 1980. In the 1930's, in addition to heavy civil engineering, under the direction of Hugh Beaver, the firm brought together architecture and mechanical services with civil engineering, and so was able to offer to industrial clients a complete service. In 1939, they designed 3 large Ordnance factories for the Ministry of Supply; three other smaller factories followed later. The same year Hugh Eyre Campbell Beaver was a partner of the company. Other notable designs were the Kincardine Bridge, Guinness and Co's brewery at Park Royal, the Captain Cook graving dock at Sydney, the Singapore naval base, supervision of construction of Phoenix units for the Mulberry harbours and an underground factory for aeroplane engines at Corsham.
