About the Item

A wonderfully humorous original drawing by Italian-born artist Vincenzo Zito (1900–1966) depicting an unforgettable face-to-face encounter between a startled skunk and a wide-eyed Great Dane. Rendered in graphite and pen and ink, the composition captures the split second before either animal makes its next move. The Great Dane recoils in comic disbelief while the skunk stands its ground with arched back and raised tail, creating a scene filled with anticipation and wit. Beneath the drawing, Zito has added his own handwritten captions: "All right, but don't make such a stink over it. No weak links—I hope," revealing the artist's keen sense of humor. Executed with remarkable draftsmanship, the drawing showcases Zito's confident line work. The spotted coat and expressive features of the Great Dane are beautifully rendered, while the skunk's exaggerated posture and expression heighten the humor. The generous use of negative space focuses attention entirely on the interaction between the two animals, making the composition all the more effective. A favorite within Palm Beach's social circles during the 1950s and 1960s, Zito became known for his witty animal drawings and illustrations, combining exceptional technical skill with lighthearted storytelling. His original works remain sought after for their charm, originality, and unmistakable sense of humor. Presented in a custom black wood frame with a cream mat and conservation glass, this original drawing would make an exceptional addition to a collection of sporting art, canine art, animal illustrations, or whimsical mid-century works on paper.
