About the Item

This late 17th-century Mexican oil on copper painting of a 12th century sculpture of the Virgin at Toledo, known as the Virgen del Sagrario de la Catedral de Toledo. It owes its name to the fact that she was placed in the Sacrarium of the Cathedral, where the relics of saints are kept. In the 17th century, there an emerged a cult of the Virgen del Sagrario that was centred in Toledo Cathedral - the spiritual heart of Spain and among the most venerated in the Hispanic world. Images of the sculpture, like this work, were disseminated across the Atlantic by missionaries and patrons who sought to reaffirm ties to the metropolitan Church. They typically show the Virgin enthroned within a silver or architectural niche, richly robed in embroidered gold and crowned beneath a radiant mandorla, holding the Christ Child as Virgo Regina. Around her may appear attending angels, Eucharistic symbols, or the coat of arms of Toledo Cathedral, underscoring her dual identity as both celestial queen and civic protectress. Painted on copper, an expensive medium that was prized for its luminous surface and durability, the painting’s meticulous execution and jewel-like finish exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship of late Baroque workshops active in Mexico City and Puebla. The use of copper—often imported from Michoacán—allowed for intense colour saturation and precise detail, qualities that appealed to a devout clientele seeking portable, luxurious icons.
