19th c. Dutch Seascape Watercolour Painting by Martinus Schouman An atmospheric and finely executed early 19th-century Dutch marine watercolour attributed to Martinus Schouman, depicting sailing vessels battling heavy seas beneath a vast turbulent sky. The composition possesses a striking sense of movement and drama, with a foreground vessel pitching sharply amongst foaming waves while distant ships emerge through mist and sea spray beyond. Executed in delicate washes with restrained tonal colouring, the work demonstrates the subtle handling and maritime sensibility associated with the Dutch Romantic marine tradition. The watercolour is signed “M. Schouman” lower left and bears strong stylistic similarities to known marine works by the artist and his circle. Martinus Schouman was an important Dutch painter, draughtsman and printmaker, particularly admired for his marine subjects and coastal scenes. Grandson and pupil of Aert Schouman, he exhibited extensively during the early 19th century and his works are represented in Dutch museum collections. Presented in a gilt frame with washline mount under glass. Condition: The watercolour remains in good overall condition with gentle age-related toning.
