About the Item

Artist: Andrew Nicholl R.H.A. (1804–1886) “Castle by the Lough, County Antrim” Medium: Watercolor on paper, signed lower right A. Nicholl R.H.A. A serene Irish landscape depicting cattle on a winding lakeside road with a distant castle on the water’s edge, framed by graceful trees beneath a bright sky. This finely balanced composition exemplifies Nicholl’s mastery of atmospheric perspective and delicate handling of light and foliage, characteristic of his poetic vision of the Irish countryside. Presented in a gilt and ivory mount with gilt frame. Circa 1860 Northern Ireland Provenance: Private Irish collection, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. Andrew Nicholl RHA: Andrew Nicholl was an Irish watercolour painter, and a founding member of the Belfast Association of Artists. From 1832, Nicholl exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. He became an associate of the RHA in 1847, then a full member in 1860. Nicholl used a technique in many paintings called ‘sgraffito’, a term used to describe the action of scraping to highlight certain elements, such as flowers in a landscape. Nicholl’s work was described as ‘totally original compositions, and because the scale of the flowers and building is so irrational, they have a surrealist quality…it is the quality which makes them the most haunting Irish paintings of the nineteenth century.’ His work in included in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Ulster Museum.
