About the Item

The scene is animated but unhurried. At its centre, a woman raises her arms — holding what appears to be a tambourine — while a man standing in front of her plays the accordion; the gathered figures around them suggest a popular festa, possibly a tarantella. Behind them, whitewashed buildings cling to the headland, a medieval tower rises on the promontory, and the bay opens out in a haze of pearl grey and fading pink — the particular light of a Neapolitan dusk that painters of this school spent careers pursuing. A crescent moon is visible in the upper sky. The islands of Procida and Ischia are visible on the horizon. The painting belongs to the tradition of the Scuola di Posillipo — the movement of Naples-based landscape painters active from the 1820s onward, known for their plein air observation and atmospheric handling of southern Italian light and coastal life. The figure work here is accomplished: small in scale but individually characterized, with convincing posture and movement. The vegetation in the lower right is handled with particular confidence — loose, broken brushwork that holds up at close range. This is professional work, painted by a skilled hand. Unsigned. The stretcher bars and canvas, examined from the reverse, are consistent with the second half of the 19th century. The painting has not been cleaned and retains its original surface throughout. Presented in the original giltwood frame — scrollwork moulding with a gilded inner slip — showing systematic age cracking to the gesso ground consistent with a frame of this period and entirely normal for its age. The structure is sound. A note on condition: the canvas shows areas of thinning and a small number of pin-sized holes, visible when held to light. The paint layer is stable throughout — no losses, no crazing, no cracking. A future owner may wish to have the canvas lined or backed as a conservation measure. Despite its uncleaned condition, the palette remains striking — the warm terracottas and whites of the figures, the deep greens of the coastal vegetation, and the luminous pink-grey of the dusk sky read with considerable force. This is a very decorative painting, and one that would hold its own in a serious interior.
