About the Item

In this listing you will find a striking and large 19th-century Orthodox icon from the Balkans, painted in oil on canvas and depicting Saint George alongside Saint John the Baptist. Saint George is represented as a youthful warrior, dressed in armor with a vivid red mantle and holding his characteristic spear. Beside him stands Saint John the Baptist, portrayed in an austere dark garment and holding a long cross and scroll. Both figures are identified by inscriptions in Church Slavonic and surrounded by gilded halos. Above the saints, two winged angels emerge against the warm ochre ground, jointly presenting a crown—an unusual and particularly charming element that gives the composition a strong sense of symmetry. A sparsely rendered landscape with a tree appears behind Saint John, while the restrained setting focuses attention on the two monumental figures. The icon is particularly appealing for its distinctive provincial character. Rather than the highly formalized manner associated with major urban icon-painting workshops, the figures have an expressive, almost folk-like quality, combining traditional Orthodox iconography with the increasingly naturalistic approach to faces, anatomy and clothing that appeared in Balkan religious painting during the 19th century. The saturated reds, greens and blues contrast beautifully with the subdued earth-toned background and aged gilding. Executed in oil on canvas and presented in a later giltwood frame. The painted surface displays an attractive craquelure and signs of age and use consistent with its 19th-century origin, including areas of wear and minor paint losses. These traces of time contribute to the historic character of the work while leaving the composition and principal figures clearly legible. A highly decorative example of 19th-century Balkan Orthodox devotional painting, combining ecclesiastical tradition with the individual and expressive hand of a regional icon painter.
