About the Item

Attributed to Charles Edward Hallé (British, 1846-1914) "Mother and Child" A Fine oil on canvas. The Victorian era artwork depicting a young mother holding her joyful infant child, within a carved gildwood and gesso frame. (Relined). Signed (l/r): C.E. Hallé, circa 1870. Charles Edward Hallé (British, 1846-1914) Born in Paris, the son of Sir Charles Hallé. He painted portraits and historical scenes and studied at the Royal Academy of London under professors Richard Doyle and Baron Marochetti. During his travels throughout Europe, in France he worked with Victor Mottes, a student of Ingres. While in Italy, he began working on the tradition of Neo-Classicism. In 1866, When he got back to London, he exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of London. He then moved back to Venice, Italy where he studied the techniques of Venetian Masters. In 1877, together with Joseph Commyns, he worked with Lord Coutts Lindsay in the opening of The New Grovesnor Galley. In 1888 he and Burne-Jones opened the gallery on Regent's Street where he exhibited many of his works. Hallé's works are part of the collection at the Sheffield Museum. DISCLOSURE: This painting was previously offered and sold at Christie's London, Sale 5108, on March 7, 2007, Lot 1143. It was described as 'Follower of Charles Edward Hallé'. However, after the painting was subsequently cleaned and restored, the signature 'C.E. Hallé' was found under the old varnish on the lower right edge of the canvas. Given that Christie's London had described it as 'Follower of Charles Edward Hallé', and the signature was only discovered after cleaning, we decided that the right thing to do was to describe it as 'attributed to Charles Edward Hallé' rather than definitively as 'by Charles Edward Hallé'. Based on the style, age, detailed quality, and subject matter, which are consistent with other works listed on Artnet, we strongly believe that this is, in fact, a work by Charles Edward Hallé. However, considering the aforementioned comments, we believe that an 'attribution' is more appropriate than a definitive 'by'. Measures: Canvas height 27 3/4 inches (70.5 cm) Canvas width 40 7/8 inches (103.8 cm) Frame height 51 1/2 inches (130.8) Frame width 39 inches (99.1 cm) Frame 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm).
