This original watercolour by David Cox, signed and dated 1849, depicts a tranquil pastoral landscape with a distant castle and grazing sheep, painted with the expressive freedom and atmospheric sensitivity for which the artist is celebrated. Executed during the mature period of his career, the composition demonstrates Cox's remarkable ability to capture the changing effects of light and weather with fluid washes and economical yet confident brushwork. Regarded as one of the most important British watercolourists of the nineteenth century, David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and played a significant role in the development of landscape painting in Britain. His innovative handling of watercolour, characterised by freshness, spontaneity and an acute observation of nature, influenced generations of artists and remains highly admired by collectors today.
