About the Item

Refined oil painting on canvas, framed in carved and gilded wood. This work depicts the portrait of King Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), as evidenced by the inscription at the top right. The king is depicted standing in profile, with uncovered hair, a beard, and a moustache. He wears a formal dark suit, typical of the severe Spanish court fashion of the time, accented by a striking white ruff around his neck. In his right hand, near the center of his chest, he holds a cross, a symbol of his deep connection as the protector of Catholicism. This is a painting of great taste and refinement, capable of lending a touch of class to any setting. Spanish manufacture, end of the 16th century. LATE 19TH-CENTURY BICCHERNA PANEL BY ICILIO FEDERICO JONI

LATE 19TH-CENTURY BICCHERNA PANEL BY ICILIO FEDERICO JONI

Located in Firenze, FI

The refined and unique "Biccherna Panel," the name given to the Chamber of Siena City Hall, features a thin tempera painting on a gold background mounted on a wooden panel, framed by a contemporary, finely carved, and gilded wooden frame. This work is a replica of the famous "Biccherna Panel," which depicts the good governance of Siena and was created by Ambrogio Lorenzetti around 1344. At the top center is an old man, the symbol of the municipality of Siena, adorned with symbols of power such as a scepter and a shield bearing eagles. At his feet lies the she-wolf, also a symbol of power, along with the young Sieno and Ascanio, sons of Remus and the mythical founders of Siena. The panel served as the cover for the municipal accounting records, to which the coats of arms and the inscription below also refer, pertaining to the families of the Gabella executors—that is, those responsible for the tax revenues of the Republic of Siena. It is now preserved in the Siena State Archives. This panel, the original of which is preserved in the Siena State Archives, is a copy made by the well-known Sienese forger Icilio Federico Joni...
