About the Item

Follower of Nathaniel Hone the Elder, RA (Irish, 1718-1784) ‘Portrait of a boy with his spaniel’ Three-quarter length portrait of a boy wearing a russet coat, white neckcloth and patterned waistcoat, a spaniel at his side, oil on canvas. Possibly painted by Hone’s son, John Camillus Hone. Provenance: purchased by the owner's mother in Ireland in 1971. The artist had ten children, five girls and five boys, but only five of them survived infancy and John Camillus (1759-1836) was undoubtedly his father's favourite. He appeared in a number of his father's principal portraits, including "The Piping Boy" (1769) and "The Spartan Boy" (1775). It is likely also that he was the sitter in Hone's "Portrait of a boy, holding a red folio" (Royal Academy, 1771)
