Artist Frederick Hepner Buchholz (1901 - 1983) Connecticut. Oil on Canvas, WPA Modern Industrial American Scene of 1940s WWII Aircraft Factory Workers, titled "Aircraft Riveters". Fred is know for his vibrant tones to achieve dramatic contrast. In original gold tone frame, hand-painted by Buchholz. Canvas size is 24" x 18". Two labels, on verso : Essex Art Association, Inc. From the estate of Zsolt Rumy (1942–2024) was the Hungarian-born founder, CEO, and visionary behind Zoltek Corporation, the global leader in industrial-grade carbon fiber production. He revolutionized the industry by developing low-cost carbon fibers, making them viable for large-scale applications like wind turbine blades, automotive parts, and aerospace. Bio: A highly individual Modernist painter, Frederick H. Buchholz created works that embraced urban and rural landscapes, scenes of industrial life, and vibrant depictions of circus folk. Buchholz began painting as an adolescent and later enrolled at the Arts Student League of New York under the tutelage of Kenneth Hayes Miller. Early work employed a distinct color palette and futuristic abstract style which was uniquely his own. Involved in the Society of Independent Artists, Buchholz was less concerned with the commercial side of the art world and stuck with his unique stylistic traits. Circus performers were an enduring theme, painted in a range of styles from the expressionist Circus Interlude (1940) to the whimsically figurative. During World War II, the American artist was greatly influenced by his work in an aircraft factory. Afterward, Buchholz became increasingly focused on landscapes around his home in Old Lyme. Frederick Heppner Buchholz was born in 1901 in Springfield, MA, and from an early age (in high school) began painting with local painters. During the Great Depression, he managed to overcome the economic situation and with little support, made it to New York City. There he enrolled in the Art Students League under the tutelage of Kenneth Hayes Miller (1876-1952). When Buchholz's funds ran out and he couldn't afford to continue his studies, he began to work. He started out at a printing company and then a designer for a textile firm, where his specialty was blanket designs. This work supported him throughout the 30s and early 40s and allowed him to continue to paint without financial help from the Federal Arts Projects. In 1922, he met and married another young artist and together they opened a tea shop in Greenwich Village. This soon became a popular place for many artists and intellectuals to meet and converse. The constant development of New York City influenced him to paint his surroundings and address social realist themes in his work. Buchholz also depicted circus inspired scenes. Buchholz became an active member in the Society of Independent Artists, which was founded so that artists could exhibit modernist artwork without restrictions of jury selection, style, or subject matter. Buchholz exhibited with SIA from 1922 until 1944. Buchholz is among the American artists who flourished during the Great Depression and the early 20th century, and who is now receiving renewed appreciation. He provided insight into American urban life at this time of constant change. His style has been praised for "his strong angles, powerful bisected compositions and bold color."
