About the Item

Friedrich Schiemann (1918 Recklinghausen-1991 Düsseldorf) Untitled, 1967 Watercolor and ink on paper, signed and dated upper left Framed with museum glass Dimensions: 52 x 76 cm (frame) 41 x 55 cm (sheet) Friedrich Schiemann, grandson of sculptor Aloys Janik, began studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1946 after initially training to be a teacher and being drafted into military service. He initially studied under Werner Heuser (1880-1964) and subsequently became Otto Pankok's (1893-1966) first master student at the post-war academy. After graduating in 1950, he worked as a freelance artist. In 1953, he was the youngest winner in the field of painting, alongside Hermann Teuber (1894-1985), to receive the Cornelius Prize from the jury of the Kunstverein Rheinlande und Westfalen. In 1975, he accepted a guest lectureship at the University of Bochum. During this time, he undertook numerous study and working trips to Corsica, France, Spain, and Greece. His works were mainly influenced by Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968). Portraits and abstract compositions, which increased significantly after 1975 and stand out for their broader brushstrokes and colorful palette, are part of his oeuvre. Particular attention should be paid to his watercolors, which are particularly prevalent in works from the 1970s and 1980s. According to the artist himself, they reflect unreflective work. The motif seen can pass directly from the eye to the hand and is filtered only by experience and temperament. His color scheme shows sensitive nuances, which are mostly combined with violet or turquoise. Overlapping, abstract lines, signs, and proportions support the often abstract character. All of Schiemann's watercolors share a cheerfulness that is transferred to the viewer.
