About the Item

Vivid and powerful, this large Art Deco mural study was painted by Elsa Jemne for the Northern States Power Building in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1930-31. The painting shows a nude male figure riding a blue horse, his arms outstretched and generating bolts of energy, with streaks of red lightning behind, all clearly referring to the Northern States' purpose. Jemne used a brilliant palette of deep red, black, white and blue, and portions of the canvas are silver-leafed. Northern States, which still exists, provided electricity and gas to homes and businesses across several states in the upper Midwest, and built an important Art Deco building for its headquarters on Wabasha Street in downtown St. Paul. Designed by Ellerbe & Company, the building included murals by Jemne as well as exterior metal sculptures representing Flame, Sunlight, and Water Power. (Today, the building is part of the Ecolab campus.). The artist also painted murals for the Stearns County Courthouse in St. Cloud, Minnesota, as well as WPA murals for two post offices. Jemne had a close relationship with the Great Northern Railroad, which commissioned her to paint portraits of Blackfoot Indians such as Little Plume; Many Tail Feathers; Mrs. Curly Bear; and Lazy Boy. The painting is oil on canvas, and is annotated and signed on the front; the reverse retains an original label giving the painting's title and purpose.

"Justice Triumphant", Mural Study for Queens, Ny Courthouse, circa 1941-1942

"Justice Triumphant", Mural Study for Queens, Ny Courthouse, circa 1941-1942

By Eugene Francis Savage

Located in Philadelphia, PA

A striking example of WPA mural art, this study for one of the murals proposed for the new Queens Supreme Courthouse -- a 1930s Works Progress Administration project in Queens, New York -- was painted by Eugene Savage. Like many paintings from the period, the study is teeming with allegory and symbolism, surmounted at the top by the figure of Justice with a long sword, spurning businesspeople at her feet who offer gifts and favors. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...
