About the Item

A compelling monochrome drawing by the Danish artist Hans Peter Carlsen (1855–1950), signed and dated 1919. The composition depicts a tranquil winter forest, where slender trees rise from a snow-covered landscape rendered through subtle tonal contrasts and a remarkable sense of atmosphere. Executed with confident draftsmanship, the work captures the stillness of the Nordic landscape through carefully observed textures and delicate transitions between light and shadow. Hans Peter Carlsen was born on the island of Funen and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts alongside fellow students L.A. Ring and H.A. Brendekilde. While his classmates went on to become two of Denmark’s most celebrated painters, Carlsen’s life took a dramatically different course. In 1892, at the age of 37, he was committed to an institution where he remained for the following 57 years. Deprived of access to the countryside that had inspired his earlier work, as well as conventional painting materials, Carlsen continued to create from memory. Using charcoal and his distinctive scratching technique to produce highlights and fine details, he reconstructed landscapes from his recollections of the Danish countryside. This drawing, created in 1919 during his institutionalization, is a poignant example of that practice, demonstrating both technical skill and an enduring connection to nature despite decades of isolation. The drawing is presented in an elegant gilt frame with classical bead-and-reel decoration, complementing the character of the work and making it an exceptional example of early 20th-century Danish works on paper.
