About the Item

Pulsating with life and color, this depiction of a crowded mom-and-pop store in wartime America, filled with a sailor in full regalia, homemakers and children, grandmothers and working women, all choosing their purchases and gossiping with the clerks, is a vivid snapshot of domestic life in 1943. The clothing, hats, purses and other accessories of the people shown here bring back a tumultuous period in lively detail. The artist, Joseph Bolden, was a painter and illustrator who brought the 1940s to vivid life in all his work.
