About the Item

A John Fulleylove (1845-1908)19th Century Grand Tour Print of The Porta della Carta Venice. A highly detailed offset view of the 15th century entrance to the Ducal Palace. Much of the intricate Venetian carvings are captured naturally, as if walking by and looking upwards on approach. In the centre of the frame, one of the Acritani Pillars stands before the Portrait of the Four Tetrarchs, a Roman porphyry sculpture in striking reds and purples. Figures in period dress add scale and movement to the complex scene, with more to discover on every viewing. John Fulleylove (1845-1908) Born in Leicester, Fulleylove initially trained as an architect before becoming an artist in watercolours and oils. Widely exhibited in the 1870s, he became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1879 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters In 1883. Fulleylove married fellow artist Elizabeth Elgood (1849-1919) and had three children, all artists. Daughter Joan Fulleylove became a stained glass artist, with works still in place today.
