Joseph Bidzinski (American, active mid-20th century) Native American Ceremonial Procession, 1950 Oil on canvas A striking mid-century American figurative painting depicting a Native American ceremonial procession, signed and dated lower right “J. Bidzinski ’50.” Executed in oil on canvas, the composition presents a richly stylized gathering of tribal elders, women, and children rendered in flattened, rhythmic forms and vibrant earth-toned color fields. The scene combines Plains and Southwestern iconography, including feathered ceremonial headdresses, buffalo-horn headgear, patterned blankets, and symbolic architectural and totemic motifs in the background. The artist’s use of bold contour lines, simplified modeling, and decorative repetition reflects the influence of WPA-era mural painting and American Regionalist modernism, traditions that sought to celebrate indigenous culture and American identity through monumental figuration.
