Jules Depierre French Farmyard Scene with Chickens, Oil on Panel, Late 19th Century A late 19th-century French farmyard painting by Jules Depierre, executed in oil on a wooden panel and signed “Depierre” at the lower left. Depierre was a French genre and landscape painter active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although biographical information about the artist remains limited, his recorded works include rural landscapes, farmyard compositions and harbor scenes rendered with an intimate, observant approach. The composition depicts a colorful rooster and six hens gathered in the sunlit courtyard of a rustic French farm. Behind the flock is a weathered plaster wall punctuated by a deeply shadowed, stone-framed opening. A woven basket or nesting vessel hangs nearby, while feeding dishes and scattered vegetables appear along the right side. These modest domestic details give the scene a convincing sense of everyday agricultural life. Depierre worked directly on a rigid wooden panel, a support particularly suited to precise detail and controlled passages of paint. Broadly brushed and scumbled layers establish the mottled plaster wall and dusty earth, while finer strokes articulate the birds’ plumage. Selective impasto emphasizes the rough masonry, basket and brightly colored feathers. The rooster’s red comb, orange breast and blue-green tail provide vivid accents against the restrained ochre, taupe and umber palette. Long cast shadows establish the direction of the sunlight and visually anchor the birds within the courtyard. Presented in an elaborate period giltwood and composition frame with a broad molded cove, inner foliate slip and deeply modeled outer border of scrolling acanthus leaves. The richly ornamented frame complements the painting’s warm tonal range. The painting and frame retain an appealing antique surface, with expected craquelure, rubbing, scattered marks and small losses consistent with age. Later hanging hardware is present on the reverse.
