About the Item

This atmospheric maritime painting presents a quiet coastal scene beneath a dark, cloud-filled evening sky. A single sailboat moves across the calm water, positioned beneath a pale moon that breaks through the surrounding clouds and creates a subdued point of light in the composition. In the foreground, a rocky shoreline extends across the lower portion of the painting, with several seabirds captured in flight above the water. The restrained palette of grey, blue, olive and brown gives the work a distinctly nocturnal character, while the horizontal horizon and central placement of the sailboat create a balanced and straightforward composition. The painting is housed in an older gilt wood frame with a broad, stepped profile. The frame has developed an aged surface with scattered marks and variations in the gilding, giving it an authentic period appearance.
