About the Item

This superbly painted view of the mountains framing a river valley in northern New Mexico is attributed to Frank Guy Applegate, who lived and worked in the state during the 1920s, and is known for his watercolors -- such as this -- that present strong, abstracted views of the local landscapes, all in vivid colors and bold strokes of paint. Applegate was considered one of the New Mexico Modernists, and was accompanied on some of his painting forays by B.J.O. Nordfeldt, Andrew Dasburg and Josef Bakos. Applegate also had enormous respect for the culture and artistry of the native people, and encouraged a revival of the Pueblo style of architecture, soon to be mastered by John Gaw Meem. Dimensions include matte and frame; visible painting is 18 inches high by 23 inches wide.

"Pueblos", Classic WPA-Era Mural Study with Native Americans for Los Angeles, CA

"Pueblos", Classic WPA-Era Mural Study with Native Americans for Los Angeles, CA

Located in Philadelphia, PA

This classic example of WPA-period mural painting, executed by Verona Burkhardt for the Immigration and Naturalization Center in Los Angeles, depicts five Pueblo Indians in the foreground and a magnificent landscape of canyons and Pueblo dwellings in the background. This served as a study for one of five large canvases she delivered to California in 1941 or 1942, but the building was cordoned off due to America's entrance into World War II. Burkhardt (or Burkhard) was the daughter of two important artists and was introduced to painting and crafts at an early age. In her prime, she won seven U.S. Government mural commissions in national competitions for buildings in Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. She settled in Grand Junction...

Geza Kende (1899–1952) California Landscape Oil Painting, Circa 1930

Geza Kende (1899–1952) California Landscape Oil Painting, Circa 1930

Located in Southampton, NJ

Beautiful early 20th century California landscape by Hungarian American painter Geza Kende (1889–1952). Executed in oil on canvas, the painting captures a dramatic mountain landscape beneath a luminous sky filled with soft rolling clouds. The composition centers on a rugged rock formation rising above gently sloping green hills, with distant mountain ranges extending toward the horizon. Kende’s painterly brushwork and subtle color transitions create a strong sense of atmosphere and depth. The sky, rendered with layered whites, blues, and grays, gives the painting a dynamic presence while contrasting beautifully with the warm earth tones of the landscape below. Paintings by Geza Kende reflect the tradition of early 20th century American landscape painting...
