A anonymous 17th-century Continental School oil on canvas depicting Saint Jerome in penitence. The saint is portrayed kneeling in prayer before a crucifix, dressed in the traditional red robe with the cardinal’s hat placed nearby—iconographic attributes that identify him as one of the great Doctors of the Church. The composition places the figure within a rugged, natural landscape evocative of the hermitage traditionally associated with the saint’s ascetic retreat in the Syrian desert. Such imagery was widely favored in Baroque devotional painting, emphasizing St. Jerome’s life of contemplation, scholarship, and penitence. The canvas has been relined, likely in the 19th century, and displays areas of restoration and inpainting, particularly along the right side of the composition, as illustrated in the accompanying detail photographs.
